I am a fuzzy silver-foliaged plant with bright magenta flowers (I also have white – pink relatives). I have been around since medieval times and was used for candle wicks during that time period. During my first year of growth I do not produce flowers, just the fuzzy silver foliage, causing many to mistake me for lamb’s ear.
Who am I?

I am using my dining room table to baste this big one -- it's about 105 x
105 inches (king size).
It's been a while since I've finished one this big.

I use to have this plant-I think! It came with the garden. It had pretty silver, fuzzy foliage and little Sweet William magenta flowers. I thought it was lamb's ear!
ReplyDeleteTheres a plant I know of called mullein (did I spell it right?)
ReplyDeleteUseful for when you are out hiking and forget the um...important pappers..(blush)
Anyway it has silvery fuzzy leaves and was used for torches as the flower stalks were tall and thick...but this flower is yellow so I don't know what yours is :(

ReplyDeleteI've changed my answer...LOL I think that it could be the "Rose Campion" that I was asking about in another forum. I had it in N.B. and it had the fuzzy silvery leaves and very dark magenta flowers. And that's my final answer....LOL"

Lychnis coronaria
ReplyDeleteKathy-I googled your entry and that is exactly what I had for years in my garden. Any common name for it?
ReplyDeleteYes Dianne, it's the Rose Campion like I mentioned in my comment. I have a picture of it in my blog from when I lived in N.B. I loved the color of the bloom....so rich.

OIC Taracotta. I thought you were just guessing and that Kathy knew. Glad you both knew. Smart ladies!
ReplyDeleteLOL....Dianne, I was just guessing, but knew that the scientific name that Kathy gave was the same as my known name of Rose Campion. I'm just a beginner and hardly know any of them. Lucky guess because I had one in N.B. and remember it's magenta flower and furry stalks. Thanks for the sweet comment though.

taracotta, you are pretty darn knowledgeable for a beginner! Aren't you the one who knew the name of my new phlox?
ReplyDeleteI took the details you gave of having the two toned and colors and typed into google and found a picture...LOL I am just learning the names as I go. I guess it seems like I'm knowledgable, but really I am just a beginner on the names of things and whether they like the sun or shade etc....

I looked back and saw that you hadn't given any details just the pic... I remember typing in purple phlox with white center and getting lots of hits. Google is my new friend....LOL I hope that some day I can just look at a flower and name it off no problem. Some of them I can do that, but most I have to try and find out details and type that into google.

Ah, taracotta, I think Albert Einstein once said something to the effect of "why clutter your mind, when you can just look it up." You have the thrist for knowledge and that is the making of a true horticultural genius!
