Here is a picture of the doomed burning bush. The damage to the lower part of the bush does suggest rabbits; however, there were deer tracks all around, so I am assuming they are the villains.

Oikos Tree Crops (who have not updated their web page) sells a native plant in the Euonymus family. It gets a burgundy/purple color in the fall, but the imported burning bushes are known to be invasive, crowding out native plants.

I get the Oikos catalog. It is worth reading even if you don't wish to order!
