Bambi's Back

As I walked along my arbor garden path, I looked down and saw this.

Oh, no! My luck has run out.

The deer are back.

This one has eaten the tops off all the phlox. If it ever stops raining, I will have to start spraying with a deer repellent.

Does anyone know how long it takes for basil seed to come up? I planted this with some seed about two weeks ago.
If I get down there and look through the bifocals, I can see this little sprout.

Do you think it's basil?

  1. I'm going to cuss-Damn deer! Rats! They got my roses again this year! It was loaded with about a dozen buds. I think they missed one. I had sprayed it, but the downpours we get washed it clean. Also had the Hollyhock and Hibiscus(in the ground) nibbled on.
I think that looks like Basil to me!

  2. Looks like basil to me, too. With all this cool, foggy, rainy weather, I've been having trouble getting my seeds to sprout, as well.

    Come on, Sunshine!!

  3. I can't tell from the picture, but I hope your basil is sprouting. I took your poll on painting and will be curious to see the results. We'll be repainting this year too.

  5. Dianne, thank you for cussing. I wanted to myself! I have tried that homemade mixture, but it didn't work for me.

Giddy, I have a little sunshine out there right now. I was just out on the deck chatting to the neighbor. I hope you are getting some, too.

Susie, Good luck on your painting. It is NOT much fun!

  6. That's definitly basil. The shovel shaped leaves are the ones that will remain that size but the other to should keep getting larger and more almond shaped.

Basil is great for making pesto for the freezer. Just clip the full grown leaves and process with olive oil. Then add to an ice tray and freeze as cubes.

Pesto is also great for a sauceless pesto pizza.
