Is Everyone Getting Ready for Thanksgiving?

I am.

I just cooked my sweet potatoes to get them ready for a casserole I will do on Thursday.

I do have to go to work on Thanksgiving (as I have said before, there are NO holidays off in the hospitality industry--while many get a 4-day holiday, most hospitality workers will be slaving away to make sure the guests enjoy their Thanksgiving). It's just the way it is. Our restaurant does a big buffet and is usually very busy on every holiday.

I will probably only work a couple of hours in the early morning as my job does not require I be there except to count the money and do the labor from the previous day. Then I will come home and finish my contributions to the dinner we will enjoy with my parents. My Mom is doing the turkey and dressing.

I am making a pumpkin pie with a cream cheese top layer. I have had a craving for pumpkin for the past two weeks. I hope it turns out good.

What are you all doing for the holiday?

  1. We celebrate two Thanksgivings, the one on Saturday is for my mom's family.

It's nice to have a separate day for the other half of my family. Takes the crazy out of dashing around trying to hit everyone on the same day.

  2. The turkey is defrosting in the frig. I bought the fresh green beans and brussel sprouts today (we usually don't have the brussel sprouts).
Got a few recipes from Woman's Day (or was in Family Circle?) at the hair dresser's last week for spicy sweet potatoes and a rub for the turkey).
I gave in to the buy one get 1 free frozen pies because I'm not up to baking all day tomorrow. We will only have the 3 of us, my mom and my father-in-law.

  3. I hear you, Jenn. I gave up the mad dash to two different places a few years ago. I takes all the fun out of the day.

    Homemade rolls sound good, Brit.

Dianne, it sounds like you have the most work of all. I was actually hoping to cook all day this year, but my Mom wanted to do it. I will probably cook Christmas which is on a Sun., so I won't have to work at all.

  4. Oh, Zoey, I saw this in two different places recently and I immediately thought of you: a home-sized version of the chocolate fountain! If you don't believe me, follow this link:

My sister-in-law is hosting Thanksgiving for my husband's side of the family. Since he was the oldest of 6, there will probably be close to 3 dozen there--we don't all sit at the same table! For our contribution we are bringing a corn casserole, a carrot salad, and 6 pies: 2 blueberry, 2 blackberry, and 2 Mocha Fudge (a Cooking Light recipe that I highly recommend). My daughters will be baking the berry pies. In addition to the Mocha Fudge Pies, the carrot salad is also low fat. I believe in having as many alternatives as possible to all the fattening stuff others will be bringing.

  5. Wow, Kathy, 6 pies! You do have a large group. It must be a fun day for your family.

    I believe you - LOL.
I have seen those smaller home chocolate fountains. I think it is probably a pain to try to keep them from clogging up. From what I understand even the commercial ones have a problem with stuff getting stuck in the holes...cake crumbs, etc. I even given up the idea of getting one at work.

  6. We are brining a turkey again this year. It was very tasty last year, despite the fact that I cooked the turkey upside-down.

No pumpkin pie at our house. My husband doesn't like it and I could take or leave it. We're having cheescake instead.

I am roasting asparagus with garlic (the recipe I wrote about on my blog) and making mashed potatoes with even more garlic.

The rest of the menu is decidedly non-labor-intensive: stove-top stuffing for my husband (his request!) and canned candied yams and canned whole-berry cranberry sauce for me. No sense in making the last two from scratch when only I'll be eating it. :)

I bought our rolls at Biggs. Brit's homemade rolls sound better.

  7. Kasmira, If I was cooking the turkey, I had planned to try brining it this year, too. I will have to wait until next month to try it.

Did you know that many people cook their turkey upside down on purpose? They say it keeps the breast meat more moist.

Your roasted asparagus with garlic sounds delish!
