Buddleia

It's always such a treat when my Buddleia (commonly known as the butterfly bush) begins to bloom. During the day I am always at work, so I don't see a lot of butterflies until the Buddleia  begins.   I have planted it right next to my deck so I am able to appreciate all the winged visitors as I  prance around the deck in the late afternoon.

Do you see the Monarch?

Exciting - - 3 butterflies!  I actually had 8 butterflies this afternoon at one time. I just could not get them all in the picture.
Sometimes there is even a hummer. That's the ultimate thrill!

Here is the full Buddleia  planted in one of the "deck" gardens.

I have another one on the other side, but it's the messy neighbor's side and they are having a garage sale today, so I can't get a decent picture without all the cars, motorcycles, trailers, and garage sale treasures in the pic.

I think it's very important to plant the butterfly shrub where you can see the visitors every day. It should be near a window or a deck (as I have it) so you don't miss all the excitement.

Of course, that is just my ever so humble opinion.

  1. Beautiful! I'm so envious-I've never had luck with them--they never come back in the spring. I tried 3 years in a row, but have now given up. Yours seems to be living up to it's name!

  3. I've never had luck with the butterfly bush, but you sure have. Mine always died, but maybe I'll give it a try again. Great tip to plant it near to sitting areas so you can enjoy the show. And what a show they put on, lovely!

  4. Zoey,

Your Butterfly Bush is beautiful. I saw some dwarf ones at Ball and am thinking I could fit this in my garden. I do see the Monarch.

  5. I am a huge fan of butterfly bush! I have two of them (Black Knight and Evil Ways) and they attract butterflies and other pollinators like crazy. I even saw a hummingbird at the Black Knight this year! Yours look HUGE! The blooms, I mean. I've only had mine for a couple of years and they're still getting to full size, I think. My blooms aren't anywhere near a giant as yours. Here's hoping they get there!

  6. How beautiful Zoey. I love seeing the Monarch's.I have not saw a one this summer so I will just admire yours. Your bush is so pretty. Alas another failure in my garden. I have planted two over the years and both have died. Maybe I should not give up and try again though after seeing all of the butterflies on yours. That is a great idea to have it near your deck where you can watch them.

  11. Too bad they don't sell the entire contents of the yard and the entire garage at the sale!
We sell buddleia as an annual, yet all of mine have come back, for 5 years now.

  12. Hi Zoey,
Just visited your quilting blog. Had to check out this one two. Gardening and quilting, two of my passions. Your B.B. is gorgeous! The bloom with the butterflies was so long. I planted a new variety (a smaller, patio one) by my deck this year. Hoping is does well. The larger ones seem to get real woody here in UT. I had three at my Highland home. I would cut them back quite a bit, but after ten or so years they were just too woody.
