I was outside early taking pics of the deck before the sun got high enough to cast shadows.
Last year I bought this container of switch grass 'Rotstrahlbush'. I overwintered it in it's original pot. I thought it had died until a few weeks ago when it finally came up! Really...it was late July before anything began to grow. It is still not very tall. I decided to put it in a deck vignette where I would get much more enjoyment then I get looking at it alone in this ugly plastic pot.
I love its soft feathery panicles against the rough 'Tropicana' leaves.
The panicles should get taller and turn a reddish color as fall approaches.
I love August on my deck. This is the time when my tropicals began to flower and I can move the containers around to make different combinations.
This Rembrandt dahlia began blooming this week:
The petals look paint splashed ....I love it!
Here is another Rembrandt in golden yellow and red:
DH and I are both enjoying them. It is wonderful having containers with no blooms to fade and fall onto the deck floor. J gets all the credit for the deck plants this year. He has been super diligent in his daily watering/fertilizing.
Look at the size of this coleus sitting on the floor:
They look so good I am wondering if he is singing to them each afternoon....LOL.
I hope you are all having a great Sunday, too!
Your deck looks so beautiful and I love those dahlias, especially the pink one.
ReplyDeleteSuch a pretty deck, Zoey. I love the yellow and red dallia.
ReplyDeleteIt is hot hot hot here.
I love your deck...we don't have much blooming right now...too blooming HOT...
ReplyDeleteWow- Your deck looks great. I never think of coleus as being a hanging plant...but it looks really wonderful-love all the green. xo Diana
ReplyDeleteHoly Cow! Your deck is gorgeous! And those hanging baskets of coleus are genius!!!!! So beautiful friend!!! Oh and I'm glad the switchgrass came up!! Don't you just love it when you get a surprise like that?!?!!
ReplyDeleteThose dalias are beautiful...and what a neat idea with the coleus in hanging baskets. No petal drop to have to clean up all the time. Tell your husband that he has a wonderful way with flowers...maybe he learned from the best...:)
ReplyDeleteBalisha
Once again you get the AWARD for the most beautiful Coleus!!!!!!!!!!!

ReplyDeleteYour deck looks amazing! I'd love to spend a lot of time there too!
ReplyDeleteI'm a big lover of coleus and yours are spectacular. I had only one that did anything and it's not even colorful. Our dahlias died.
I've been moving things around too. I had my Persian shield way out in the side yard and the yard is getting weedy, so I moved it near where Brian let over spray from weed killer mess with my annuals. Now I can enjoy it.
I am loving the marigolds this year too. They are starting to get that fall scent to them. The weather indeed is changing.

Zoey, it looks great, so glad you finally got blooms! I saw a gorgeous Persian Shield in a friend's yard and thought of you!
ReplyDeleteHi Zoey
ReplyDeleteYour dahlia are very beautiful this year. I hope to add some to my garden next year.
I just found your blog, and enjoyed reading a number of your posts. I also do a lot of perennial gardening- and ending up with so many plants after digging and dividing, that I potted them up and have been taking them to the farmer's market in town to sell. And the winter time activity is quilting also! Happy gardening and quilting...it is getting close to that time of year, to begin quilting, and I can't wait!
