my nearly 30-year old microwave oven died. I heard a crackle or two, smelled a bit of smoke and saw a tiny flame near the bottom of the oven door. I immediately ran over and shut it off thus losing my timer which was set for 9 minutes. The fudge recipe said to boil "for exactly 9 minutes." I use the microwave as a timer because it's more precise than my oven timer which is not digital.
I had to guess at how much longer I needed to boil the fudge. I don't think I guessed correctly as it has not set up quite hard enough yet. It's been in the refrigerator for three hours.
Then I had to trudge on out to Home Depot to find a new microwave. I had one picked out, went to the register, wrote the check and then DH noticed that one of the little rubber things on the bottom was missing. They did not have another one of those rubber things. They had no other white microwave. If I didn't find one tonight, I'd have to wait until at least Tuesday to get one. So off we went to store number 2 where we did finally get one. I hate shopping.
I have not had a good day today. The cheesecake bars I made with the pumpkin bread crumbs are only marginally successful, the fudge didn't harden, the microwave died, I tasted the vodka slush stuff and don't really like it, and my legs ache.
I probably should have spent a little more time tasting the vodka slush...
Making Miscellaneous Christmas Quilt Blocks
-
At the moment, I have no idea what will become of these quilt blocks I have
been making for the past couple of weeks. I guess they will remain in this
bin...

Oh poor Zoey! I'm sorry about your microwave. Hope you've had a chance to rest your poor tired legs by now.
ReplyDeleteI hope you have a wonderful Christmas, surrounded by the love of family and friends.
It's been fun getting to know you this year!
Now have a lovely rest and enjoy the festivities :)
Oh geez-30 yrs old! Ok, I'm on my third one in 22.5 years and I had to get a new one when the kitchen was remodeled because I had to get a built in one.
ReplyDeleteOk-the easiest fudge-no boiling...
I just made it today
3 cups of semi-sweet choco chips
1-14 oz can of sweet condensed milk
1 cup walnuts
pinch of salt
1 teaspoon vanilla
Add all the above to a saucepan (except the vanilla and nuts)and stir and melt the chocolate chips. Add the vanilla and nuts. Pour into about a 8-9" pan lined with wax paper (I used a non-stick and greased it a bit). Refrigerate for 2+ hours and cut in squares.
Darn it, Zoey, I thought you were sitting there with your feet up and now you're having to run around! Darn microwave. I'm nursing mine along since all the buttons quit working except "minute plus" and "popcorn." Those are the important ones anyway.
ReplyDeleteYes, you can make a quickie fudge recipe but you and I know if you don't sweat through the exact timing and the "soft ball stage" it's really not quite the same! My fudge came out great today which makes up for last Xmas when I accidentally bought milk chocolate chips instead of semi-sweet. It was really disgusting.
Hope you have a Merry Christmas anyway!
Why does it always seem to happen this way?? I'm so sorry you have had such a bad time..as if there isn't enough stress at this time of year!!!
ReplyDeleteI had my oven die on me one Thanksgiving I have double ovens but I use one for the turkey the other pies etc.. it was just so aggravating.
Hope today is better for you and I hope you have a very Merry Christmas. (don't drink too much slush you'll hate yourself tomorrow.:)
I forgot to sign my name.
