Second set of Big Planters at Work

I thought I would show you how the second set of planters are filling out. There are two of these flanking our dining room entrance.

I am not 100% happy with these. My plan was to highlight the foliage with a minimum of flowers. That part works, I think. It's just not as full as I would like it to be.

Here's a close up of the foliage colors

The scaevola in the front (little blue flowers) is not nearly as full as I had hoped and the coleus in the back is too small.

  1. Well, if it were my planter I'd be trimming off some of that chartreuse, which seems to visually overpower the other plants. I don't know if you can somehow trade that coleus for another one with larger leaves and use the small-leafed one somewhere else?

Not that you want or need any advice...I'm just sitting here at my computer pretending your container is my container, and thinking with my typing fingers, haha.

  2. Karen, Please feel free to give me advice any time! That is part of the pleasure of blogging.

I would love to replace that coleus since it is not growing as tall as I expected, but am afraid I am stuck now as the plants are pretty well gone around here.

I do still think that if it was about a foot taller and wider, it would still work. I wanted the contrast between leaf sizes/colors. Maybe it will take off and grow like crazy. I can only hope.

  3. Oh, that's too bad there's no more plants. We have several great nurseries that are open all year. I couldn't imagine being without a source of plants! (Or is it just that you can't find coleus anymore?) Last year I bought a few huge coleus plants at this time of year. They saved my front stair display!

  4. Karen, We have two nurseries, but they are small and their annual selection is pretty much done by July 4. Places like Walmart and Home Depot have little left. Of course, I have not actually gone and looked. I am talking from past experience.
