Country Chair Container

My poor old chair should have been thrown away this year, but with a hammer and a few nails, I think I can get one more year out of it. I planted it with purple petunia, blackie sweet potato vine, variegated vinca, and orange calla lilies. So I won't forget that I planted the callas, I took the picture with the label at the back. I hope they grow and flower as this container really needs the punch of orange color. The sweet potato vine and the vinca will grow fast and all the way to the ground. A major pet peeve of mine is seeing chairs planted without plants that hang down. I just hate to see the bottom of the pot sticking out, or, in my case, the screening that covers the bottom. Please, please if you plant a chair, cover the mechanics! It will make or break your whole arrangement. I can't tell you how many chair plantings I have seen that would be quite wonderful if only the bottom of the pot was not sticking out.

  1. Dear Zoey
I just discovered your site through Garden Web, and I am enchanted! I love your quilting, tablescapes and gardening. I had to comment on your planted chair when you said that with a few nails you might get another year out of it. My planted chair bit the dust this year (after being nailed together several times)and I am hunting now for another chair. Gardening is my first love, though I have lots of other interests too, including quilting and paper crafting.
A question: When you fertilize once a week with Miracle-Gro, are you using it full strength i.e. one tsp. per gallon of water for potted plants? I have been experimenting with using 1/4 tsp. MG per gallon of water everytime I water (everyday).
I've spent enjoyable hours looking at your many pages! Please keep it up!

  2. Hi Florrie,
Welcome and thank you for the kind words. I wonder how I got on the garden web???
I use about 3 of the scoops that come with the Miracle Grow in a 5 gal. container--so a bit more than 1/2 strength...sometimes more because I just sort of dump some in and fill the bucket. I am really not that precise about it. Good luck finding another chair. I would be lost without my two chairs. They just seem to fill certain spaces where I need a container with height and I think they are so cute.

  5. I also found you through gardenweb. I think it was through a thread I started on cottage gardens - asking for gardening blog recommendations.

I thought of another reason not to like planted chairs with exposed pots - it looks like a potty chair. YUCK!
