I don’t particularly like most hosta blooms.
In the front glider garden, I cut them all off as soon as the stalks shoot up. To me, they just look like a big mess in that area. In the rockwall garden, I am not as picky and I leave most of them for at least a while.
I have seen some hosta blooms that actually look good. The ones we have at work are very nice. They are on shorter, more sturdy stems and the flowers themselves are bigger.
So what does everyone else think about hosta blooms?
Let the Basting Begin!

I am using my dining room table to baste this big one -- it's about 105 x
105 inches (king size).
It's been a while since I've finished one this big.

I love 'em. I have a green-leafed plant that came with this place that has the sweetest, lightest scented white blooms. Hold well in the vase, too.
ReplyDeleteBut I love all of them - infinite in variety, but subtle.
I like them too when they have their little bell flowers still attached. After they are finished, off they come.
ReplyDeleteI don't like the wispy purple flowers on my older varieties, but I have 3 different hostas that have nice flowers.
ReplyDeleteNot crazy about the flowers for most of the varieities I've seen. I have to admit I've not seen that many so I could be missing out on some I'd really like.
ReplyDeleteI think you make a great point that flowers are not the best part of Hastas. For sure we all love them for growing in the shade with those big beautiful leaves...year after year.
ReplyDeleteI don't mind them, but you're right, the long stocks and tiny flowers just don't go together. I like a shorter stock and bigger flowers. Great question.

My neighbor has a tree ringed with plantings. In the spring, the shoots of Virginia Bluebells shoot up. In the summer, the hosta blooms echo the effect.
ReplyDeleteEn masse, hosta blooms can look nice. However, if you only have a single plant, I think the blooms look ragged.
I'm not crazy about most of them but I leave them standing through the winter because I have read birds eat the seeds.
ReplyDeleteI usually cut them off before they bloom. I also cut off heuchera flowers too. If they bloom before I cut them, I put them in a vase. They both last a long time and look good in big bunches.
ReplyDeleteThanks all for your comments. Looks like no real consensus--about half like and half don't.
ReplyDeleteSandy, I have heuchera this year for the first time. I also noticed that the flowers are pretty wishy-washy and have cut them off.
