The 15 trees are now gone
and we are beginning to redo the first big border in the front of the house where the apple tree once stood. DH removed all the old plants and hauled 15 wheelbarrows of new top soil to this area. We bought a lot of shrubs and decided on this layout:
Tomorrow while I am work, he will plant them. On the side you see here, I am using the same shrubs that I have in front of the house--Ninebark and mophead false cypress--I love the form and the bright green/yellow color of the false cypress. To the side on your right, near the perennial gardens, I have two 'Limelight' hydrangeas. I have a third 'Limelight' on the left side. On the backside facing the road, we are going to plant burning bushes. That whole side will be flaming red each fall. My plan is to have a border requiring very little maintenance. While the shrubs are so small, I will fill in between with waves of Sedum 'Autumn Joy'. This will carry over the masses of pink I have in front of the house.
So that's my plan..................always subject to change. :)

It is going to be beautiful! I remember you commenting on my raised beds awhile back that your husband wanted to have some raised beds as well. Now that the trees are gone, will there be room for a new veggie garden?
ReplyDeleteNo plans for that, Stacy. He planted raspberries this year and seems content with that for now. He also has a few containers of tomatoes. We would have to remove just as many trees behind the flower gardens to make room for vegetable beds. For now it will be the farmer's market for us!

ReplyDeleteI do love change, Barb. The poor ninebark we just put in the center has been moved three times since I bought in in August!
DeleteLooks like a wonderful plan Zoey. Like the combo's of the burgundy gold. It's always so eye catching. The Sedum will be a great filler while the shrubs/conifers are growing up.

I hope so, Cher. I just hope they will grow. In the 25 yrs I have lived here, nothing (not even hostas) would grow in this area.

Thanks, Balisha. I just came in from digging up 7 burning bushes from other areas in my yard and replanting them in the border. They are pretty small, so they were fairly easy to dig up. I have a vision of them all growing together and providing a brilliant mass of red every fall. We shall see.... :) I hope you are having a wonderful Saturday.
