I Could Just Cry

The winter of 2013/2014 has been so brutal! I planted this Alberta Spruce in 1986. It matured into the exact size I imagined way back then when I wanted it to grow tall enough to cover the electric meter.

After the brutal temps of this winter, it looks like this:

99% of it is dead.  I have over a dozen of these shrubs and every. single. one. looks. like. this.

I am so sad. I feel like moving into a condo and letting someone else worry about the landscape.

  2. Wow, I am so sorry Zoey. It must have been quite cold to knock off your tree and shrubs. I can't even imagine.

  3. All the trees in our area look this way. Our lawn guy said that they will be fine. They we damaged by the cold winds. We'll just have to wait and see if he's right.

  4. I've seen so many shrubs and trees like that this year. Let's hope Balisha is right.

  6. Oh, Zoey! We have the same thing here. I have been afraid to count how many we lost this year....and the thought of replanting them and waiting for them to grow again and HOPE that they don't get wiped out AGAIN ...well, I know how you feel! xo Diana

  8. Hi Zoey, Hey, I know just how you feel. I'm hoping there's a chance they may still pull out of this. We have a dozen or so Dwarf Albertas that look just like yours, along with a bunch of dwarf conifers I paid the big bucks for that look worse. I know they will look nasty for a few years, but I'm willing to wait and see. I would give them until at least mid-June before I make the decision to discard them. The weird thing is, Dwarf Alberta's are rated for Zone 2, it was a cold winter.

  11. It's so sad to see all this damage. People are complaining everywhere and I am not sure yet of my losses. I am zone 6 and had zone 4 weather with wind chill. All I can do is wait and see.

  12. Death of old trees - from cold, blight, pests - is always so sad. Luckily You're a Gardener! So you can figure something out to go there. Maybe a decorative grass that is fast growing. Not the same but...
