I cut this mallow plant back severely in mid-July before it went to seed. It is now re-blooming beautifully. In past years I have waited to cut it back until there were quite a few seed pods. This year I have discovered that cutting in back before it expends all of its energy making seeds leads to a much nicer second bloom. Every year I learn something new...now if only I can remember it next year!
I did see the picture, Zoey, but now there's only the red X. I think it must be a problem with blogger because my profile photo has also turned into a red X. I'm going to leave it for a while and see what happens. Have a good night's sleep and hopefully, all photos will have returned in the morning.
I just checked out a few other blogs and photos seem to have disappeared at random - some are there and others not. Hope they fix it soon. Goodnight.
Actually, I've just realised that here we are sitting at our computers 'talking' to each other as though we were just next door, instead of on opposite sides of the world.
Finally I have found a web page that tells me when to cut these back. I don't know if Aug 22 is too late in Ontario Canada but they are scragely looking now so I am going to. Thanhs for the info. Brian D.
I appreciate you taking the time and effort to leave a comment. I will try to answer any questions you have. Please note due to Blogger changing word verification so almost nobody can read it, I have had to change to no word verification and only allow registered users to comment.
I am so glad you stopped by to visit my garden. I garden in lower northern Michigan (zone 5) in far less than ideal conditions. I have too many pine trees, too much shade, too many rocks, herds of hosta-munching deer and rabbits who think my lilly buds are gourmet appetizers. I am by no means an expert in horticulture or garden design--just an amateur with a shovel and a passion. My garden changes daily during the summer and I will be updating frequently.
During the winter months, I blog about my favorite cold-weather hobby--quilting and just my everyday musings.
I hope you enjoy your visit, and that you will come back soon.

ReplyDeleteThank you, Alice. Now I see it. Blogger is doing STRANGE things the past two days!

PHOTOS BACK, as you will have already seen !
ReplyDeleteIsn't that amazing, Alice! I sometimes wonder how I ever lived without the internet.
ReplyDeleteOh, Zoey! This is amazing. I was thinking of posting a picture of my pink mallow in its second bloom. I won't now, because yours looks nicer. You win!
ReplyDeleteLol, Sabine. Your Obiedient Plant was better than mine, so we're even.
ReplyDeleteI never knew you should cut it back that soon, either, and believe me, it is a real pest if you let it go to seed.
ReplyDeleteIt sure is Kathy. That is why I cut it down so early - I did not want it to reseed all over the place.
ReplyDeleteI am glad you mentioned this I will remember to cut mine back next year to get the second bloom.
ReplyDeleteFinally I have found a web page that tells me when to cut these back. I don't know if Aug 22 is too late in Ontario Canada but they are scragely looking now so I am going to. Thanhs for the info.
