Only Six Trees Left to Remove

The tree company called DH on Friday morning and said they  had a cancellation....would he like them to start at 8:00 am on Friday?   Of course, he did.  I came home from work to these scenes:

Big heavy truck on my front lawn...........
It's amazing that the white pads they put down for the truck to drive on, actually worked and there was no lawn damage.

I saw a pile of tree branches, but by the time I got home, they had already hauled away two truckloads of debris, so it did not look bad.

This is all that was left of the apple tree:

It seems that apple tree trunks are a  popular commodity ... neighbors came down asking if they could have the trunks...of course, nobody offered to cut the tree down in exchange for the wood, but if we were paying to have it cut down, suddenly everyone wanted it! :)  I guess it's used for adding flavor when BBQing.  We gave it to whomever was the first person to ask...

At the end of the work day, there was only six trees left to cut down.  They will come back on Monday to finish.

Right now I am feeling ambivalent....there is so much work we will have to do next year...Removing the apple tree has totally changed that border....the path that led to a bench is now in the wrong place...etc. etc. etc.  Where I used to have shade, I now have full sun... We need to bring in new top soil....etc. etc. etc.  It's overwhelming!

Rather than think about all the work I will soon have, I went out on the deck and cut down most of the Trebbiano dahlias that were blooming so I could bring them inside to enjoy over the weekend.  I made this quick centerpiece for my dining room table:

My next project is to change the dining room chair covers to something more autumn-ish...maybe tomorrow..............

  1. Wow that is a lot of trees coming down! More sunlight now! I can see your mind will be busy with the possibilities of more space and what to do with it:)

  2. Just take it one day at a time. It can be overwhelming I know. We had 9 trees cut down and I thought ahead to all the work that would involve. We just kept at it and got it done finally. We went from shade to sun and many things had to be changed.
Have a nice weekend and don't work yourself to death.

  4. That Dahlia centerpiece is beautiful! It is so nice to be getting those trees cut down but you're right that you do have a lot of work ahead of you in the Spring. Thankfully your husband is such a work horse helping you with all that heavy work.

  5. That is quite a job Zoey, but that's what a gardener does, change, change, change. I love the color of those Dahlias so autumn like. I'm already thinking of which areas I will redo for next year!

  6. I think you will be happy for the change. I saw your newer post and you have a nice plan laid out. Good luck planting everything.
We just received an order from Burpee. I ordered two Paw paw trees and they look like twigs. The one has leaves, but the other didn't. I want to attract the Zebra Swallowtails to our yard. I showed Burpee a photo of the one tree and they said to see how they fare in the spring.
We are going up north to Niagara Falls in a few days, but first down to the Jersey shore overnight. Carole said she could't meet up with us, so bummed about that. I don't know when we will get that way again as it's a 6+ hour drive one way.

  7. That's the great thing about hiring professional tree cutters; they know what to do and do it precisely and safely. I see you have a lot more things in your hands. Well, address them one at a time so you wouldn't get burnt out. That centerpiece is lovely, by the way!
