It's Hot and Muggy Today

I was outside at 6:30 a.m. digging out more grass, daylilies, etc. from this area where I removed the asters early this spring. I dug out 7 wheelbarrow loads while wearing long pants and a long sleeved shirt to try to keep the bugs away. They bit right through the pants and I have a butt load (and I mean that in the most literal sense!) of bug bites.

I hauled in two loads of top soil and then planted a bunch of different varities of sunflowers.

I have gotten so used to digging this week that nothing even hurts the next day. I am slowly making a bit of progress.

I forgot to plant my old watering cans. Since I used all my flowers yesterday, I just stuck some Sedum Autumn Joy in that I dug out from the area above.

See my shoes? Do you remember how these were all the rage years ago? I found them in the basement in a box of summer casual shoes. They are just as comfy as I remember them.

This is my big old appletree which is useless for apples, but very valuable for the shade it provides.

It got to 86 degrees around 4:30 this afternoon. I took a shower and went to sit under the apple tree with an ice cold glass of water and one of my new books.
It's the perfect spot to read on a hot day. I hope it rains tonight as everything is getting dry already.

All in all I had a good day. I hope you did, too.

  1. Zoey, I'm catching up on reading your blog, my, you've done a lot of work, and your garden looks great! I was wondering why your ajuga looked so good and why I hate mine when I realized it's because you have a real bed of them. I no longer do because they all crept out into the grass! And your phlox are breath-taking (6:30 AM photo).

I can't wait to see all your orange and purple baskets in bloom. I'm too lazy to plant my own baskets and always root around the plant displays at the grocery store for the ones least trampled on and least dried-out (they're usually underneath the benches!).

I like the new look of your blog too. If I wasn't so lazy I'd try out some of the new things we can do with our blogs now. I'm proud of you for figuring it out!

  2. Zoey - your blog describes my idea of the perfect day!!! I'm glad you have some nice warm weather - and hope your gardens get a little rain. We finally picked up a couple inches, and the flowers are all doing a little happy dance out there!

Love the watering cans. And the shoes!!!

  4. Wow, you did a lot of work lately! I know what hurting is. I did a bit of mulching tonight and was dripping in perspiration and I had a sleeveless shirt on! I did see my first mosquito and got him!
I hope your sunflowers come up nicely for you!

  5. Zoey, You put me to shame. I was just patting myself on the back for planting three little window boxes. :P A hammock underneath the apple tree would be so lovely!

  6. Oh, I want your watering cans! Not with plants in them though. I need them empty. My one big metal watering can didn't survive the winter and none of the others really holds enough water. Love your plantings -- such a thrifty way to get quantities of blooms! I just can't seem to find any deals this year.

  8. It's good to see you relaxing Zoey. What a lovely spot for a nice, quiet read.
You've been busy. I've been putting off the window box and container planting, trying to catch up on weeding the gardens. I have grass taking over too in one of them. It's a horrible job!
Isn't it wonderful feeling the warmth after all the cold?
We had some much-needed rain yesterday evening.
    Happy Memorial Day!
    I hope you feel better!!!
