I Found a Ninebark to Replace the Smokebush

Yesterday I stopped at Home Depot and they had a few Ninebarks.  They were not very large, but I needed one so I grabbed it and immediately took it home to plant.  Here it is where the Smokebush used to be:

I like the pop of red/purple foliage among all the green.  It is a brighter red than the Smokebush foliage.

Unfortunately after the Smokebush was removed, I realized that is was not dead!  The  leaves were just beginning to come out.

I  replanted it in a different area in hopes that it will live on and grow 10 feet tall, producing clouds of smoky blooms for many springs to come.

Yesterday I noticed my first blooms of purple Spiderwort.  Have you noticed that so many spring bloomers are in the purple color family?  I have the blue spiderwort right next to it, but it still has a few days before it blooms.

In the crappy (forgive that vulgar descriptive term) rocky area near the big arbor this pink Lupine has returned.  I am thrilled to see that it came back in this inhospitable neighborhood!

That's about it for my new bloomers.

We have been bringing the deck furniture out this week.  I am not doing nearly as many deck containers as in the past.  A number of cannas and dahlias died out over the winter. I am taking that as an omen to cut back this year.

    1. Hi Earlene, One of my smokebushes is all leafed out. The one I replaced is probably nearly dead. But it could still make a comeback. I am hoping this Ninebark goes fast as I want it at least three times as tall as it is now!

  3. I love looking at your garden, and I try to speculate how much it would cost to try to keep anything that green in Arizona. I suspect my monthly water bill would be $1,000 or more.

    1. AZ, I cannot even imagine spending that much money for water! I live in the country and have a well, so I don't pay anything for water. Of course, we have to be very protective of the well water, so we don't water the grass. I hate when it dies out during droughts!!

  4. It seems as though quite a few things are SSSLLLOOOWWW to come around this year. Hope your Smokebush does indeed grow 10ft tall.
And aren't the pink lupines wonderful. I was hoping to catch some up in the U.P. to save seed from, but their lupines haven't even THOUGHT of popping up yet.

    1. Lupines do not do all that great in my garden. I have seen other gardens with huge specimens...mine are always small, but I still enjoy them.

  5. Great color contrast with your new ninebark. Love the lupines, one of my favorite flowers ever! Mine are just about through blooming. Your garden is beautifully designed. I just love the look of it.

    1. Thanks so much, Beth, for the nice comment. Like all gardens, I have my few days of high points, then overnight it looks very blah because everything stops blooming at once. Then a few weeks later it looks good for a short time, then blah again.......................same old cycle every year no matter how I try to prevent it. :)

  7. Have to love those Ninebarks. I removed a couple of Yews this year and still haven't decided for sure what I will plant there. Have another nursery I need to visit to see if they have something I would like there. I wonder if your Cotinus dies back each year to almost the root up in your zone. They are such pretty things also.
