The Potting Bench is Still Empty

Because it's been so cold (20's at night), I have not been able to get out and do any garden work.  My poor potting bench that I set up during the warm March weather, still sits empty.
I did go out this afternoon just to take a walk around the Ponderosa to see if everything survived the winter.  I was happy to see buds on the cherry trees.

I was surprised to see creeping phlox that survived the multiple doses of Roundup I gave it last summer/fall.  I am actually kind of happy to see this as I really hated to lose all of it.

I see this blue oat grass survived in the rockwall garden.   As you can see I have not even raked this area yet.

I noticed tulip buds in the wagon wheel garden out by the road.  I hope I can get out this week to rake and cut down the dead sedum heads before the tulips bloom.

Up on the deck I was ecstatic to see the Hot Papaya coneflower survived in one of my barrels.  I sure hope it's more impressive than it was last year when it died shortly after planting and never really rebloomed as I expected it to.

I really did not do anything very impressive this weekend. Even the  banana chocolate chip bundt cake I baked did not turn out as I had hoped. It looked pretty promising as it went into the oven.

Unfortunately I did not let is cool before I turned it out.
and just like the directions warned, the warm cake stuck to the pan.

It did not look as nice as I would have liked, but it tasted good.  If you want to try it, I found the recipe on One Crazy Cookie blog.  Just make sure you let it sit and cool before you turn it out!

  1. You'll get it all done. Normally this is when we'd be doing all this stuff. I think we all feel behind because of the weather we've had. Here maple leaf seeds are going nuts dropping. I must have a hundred thousand out there and it's overwhelming. Then today I noticed the leaves on the Crape Myrtle that had started leafing out were completely dead from last week's freeze. Hope it didn't kill it.

  2. This weather has been so crazy-I wish it would make up it's mind. Warm/cold/warm/cold. I've lost so many perennials this spring. The last straw was my Perovskia--the star of my sidewalk border. I babied it along for 4 years, but the constant freezing/thawing this spring did it in.
I'm also having the same problem as Sunray Gardens with maple seedlings. In all the years I've been here, I've never had such a bumper crop of seedlings.....

  3. Your zone is about three weeks behind me here in Zone 6. I have had sooo many beautiful days, and feel pretty good with the progress. Hubby and I were talking about bundt cakes this morning. Yours looks just fine. I like your blue accents - bench and chair. They look fresh!

  5. Nothing planted here either Zoey. I covered some of my perennials two nights this last week. I didn't want the buds to freeze. I was able to get out and clean up some of the flower beds yesterday. Now it's cold and rainy and they are even predicting a few snow flakes for tomorrow.

  7. You have some good things coming, ours are just about gone, daffodils, tulips, rhodies, etc. I do have a Pagoda Dogwood that is ready to bloom. Sometimes it is not good to have the early warmth.
