How I Spent Mother's Day

I am sure many of you will be horrified by how I spent Mother's Day.

I spent a good portion of the day cleaning my closet!

I kid you not.

I even took a break from closet cleaning to cook breakfast. I bet many of you went out to breakfast. Well, I would rather spend the entire day in my own home than go out to breakfast. I have spent the past 24 years of my life in a hotel with a restaurant, so going out to eat is not quite the same for me as it is for most people. I eat in restaurants all the time. I stayed in a hotel on Friday night and had breakfast out on Saturday, so I was happy to be home cooking on Sunday.

I decided to give myself the gift I wanted most--getting all of my jackets off the closet door knobs and hung in my closet!

Yes, I am somewhat ashamed to say that my closets were so full I have had to hang things on the knobs for the past six months. My addiction to clothes shopping on the net is to blame. I just cannot resist the good deals in the outlet store of my favorite clothing distributor. I order almost every week --click, click, click.........the next thing I know it's delivered right to my desk at work.

I NEVER pay full price. In fact if it's not at least 50% off, I don't order. I have even learned to find codes on the net to get free shipping. Sometimes I even get 30% off the outlet prices and FREE SHIPPING! Who could resist? I am only human.

In the past two years of internet buying, I have amassed quite a collection of jackets. It took me a good 5 hours to clean out enough clothes so I could fit everything I currently wear into the closet. I tossed two bags of stuff. I gave my sister two pair of shoes that I never wore and I packed away two boxes of stuff that I may wear if I lose 10 lbs.

That left enough room to hang everything I currently wear. I am big on jackets. Since I gave up skirts for pants, I have been buying jackets. How else can you dress up a pair of black pants? I wear black pants almost every day. My closet now holds enough jackets that I could wear a different one every day for two months.

Here is a portion of my newly organized jackiets: I am just thrilled that I have nothing hanging on the closet door knobs! I have resolved not to order as much. It's been over a week and I have not ordered anything.

While cleaning out the closet, I found these shoes that I have no memory of buying. I am sure I purchased them at the end of last season at a deeply discounted price.
They have the same wedge heel that I just showed you on two recent purchases. I am thrilled to find them and can't wait to wear them with one of my black jackets and white tops!

My son, who lives 5 hours away, called me on Mother's Day and I did go to my Mom's with a gift after she got home at 6 p.m. My Mom is nearly 74 years old and she works (volunteers) like a Clydesdale horse for our local VFW. On Saturday she and my Dad spent the entire day--early a.m. until after 9:00 p.m. cooking for a benefit for the VFW. On Sunday they both worked the VFW Bingo until after 6p.m.

I pale in comparison to the energy my septagenarian parents have!

  1. I think you sound like you share your parent's energy! They must be fabulous people.
I like how you have your jackets arranged too-must be a fairly large closet. I'd love a walk-in one, but that may be in another lifetime. My brothers' wives have walk-ins and do not like clothes as much as me. Figures.
We had Danish and doughnuts for Mother's Day and we did eat out-nothing fancy-nachos and fajitas which were tasty!

  3. Dianne,
No walk-in for me either. I had once had two of them when I lived in Florida. I doubt that I will ever have another one.

    Betty,
I hate shopping, too. Except on the net. It's so much easier just to click and then it all appears a few days later. :)

  4. I too, cooked my own breakfast on MD. My own English Muffins and some hot Jimmy Dean sausage patties with cheese. YUM! The boys called to wish me a nice day and I had a grand day in the garden.

You would laugh to see my closet. It consists of flannel shirts, t-shirts, jeans and one basic black dress, just in case! Shoes? I buy another pair when the one I'm wearing develops holes. And like you, I never pay full price for anything.

Kudos to your parents. Mine (83 & 86) just gave up their volunteering due to Daddy's advancing dementia, but I know how much they enjoyed doing it.

  6. OK. I want to know which online store you like to shop in the most. I have the hardest time finding jackets and I much prefer a pair of basic black or khaki pants, dressed up with a jacket. Please fill us in!
On Mother's Day, I attended church with my husband, then he left to go visit his mother and I met my 18 year old daughter for lunch and she surprised me with a set of monogrammed bath towels (something I have longed for) AND she bought lunch! I spent the rest of my day putzing around outside, cleaned off the deck, rearranged the furniture and started planning some new flower beds that we are developing in our backyard.
