I Know Winter is Coming Because I'm Buying Kitchen Gadgets

And getting in the baking mood.

When did the Wilton Company start making nifty kitchen gadgets?

I found these measuring cups on my last Joanne Fabric store foray. I had a 40% off coupon to use and this set looked like a good candidate. I like their shape because they fit into my deep flour/sugar jars.
While on my organizing spree last week, I discovered that a couple of spatulas were loose around the ends allowing bacteria to get inside. They went in the garbage. So I really needed this new heat resistant set. Another Joanne's find. This time I had a 50% off coupon...usually I just buy a spool of thread to use up the coupon. Now that they carry this stuff, I predict more gadgets will find a home in my kitchen.
Behind the spatulas you see a great big metal cake lifter. How many times have you gingerly lifted a cake layer with both hands just hoping it does not break in half? Well, O.K., maybe not all that often. I guess I have only broken one or two in my entire baking life. But I am sure there are many other uses for this --like picking up a pie crust...I hardly ever make a pie crust....well, maybe I will make more of them now that I have this handy little gadget. Here's a better pic:

Who would think that these black frozen bananas and lemon half would turn into

this luscious banana/cranberry muffin?

After hardly baking all summer, so far this week I have baked pumpkin bread, a pumpkin cake with cream cheese frosting and these muffins.

The oven of the stove I bought in July is finally getting used! Though I still have not used the convection part of it. I must look into that soon.

  4. Mmmmm, and doesn't the house smell good this time of year? I love to bake, but have to give most of it away as the two of us can't eat it all. Well, we COULD, but then we'd have to hike 24 hours a day to walk it all off!

  6. Ohhh...I love kitchen gadgets too! I have a large drawer full of them myself. That was a stipulation when we remodeled the kitchen-that I had a baking center with enough cabinet and drawer space for my collection.
How come you don't peel the bananas? I guess it keeps them more their original color?
I've been baking a great deal myself lately-so much better than spending money in the store's bakery and you know how fresh everything is.

  7. Zoey, Your muffins look wonderful. Do you always freeze ripe bananas? I've never hears of doing that.
I love the morning pictures of your garden. Beautiful! I haven't even started taking care of things. Must get busy this weekend. Jean

  8. Hi Laurie, Nice to see you. My DH is not a hunter, but I come from a hunting family, so I know how the hunters are ready for a good meal when they return. Hopefully, Chris is keeping your freezer full for this winter. Is it bow season for deer like it is here?

Betty, I was just at your blog yesterday, but I missed those doughnuts. I will have to go back and take a look--they sound good. Anything with cream cheese frosting has to be good!

Susie, I think it must be something new as I have never seen all of these items from Wilton before.

Giddy, I hear 'ya. I took some pumpkin bread to work and gave my Mom & Dad some of the cake.

OSB, I hope your store has the same items! If not, you can always spend the money on more fabric...

Dianne, Well, I guess because it's just easier to toss them in peel and all. I also think the skin helps protect from freezer burn.

Jean, Yes, I always toss them in the freezer when they get too ripe. Once they get brown spots, I don't like to eat them. It's nice to always have them on hand whenever I get the urge for banana bread/muffins.

Page down, she has a recipe for Cranberry Salsa. I can't wait to try it. I figure you have cranberries in your area already since you made muffins with them.
