Have You Ever Seen so Much Sedum Autumn Joy?

I guess you have if you are a long time reader of this blog because I show it all to you every year. :)

In the foreground you can see where I dug everything out earlier in the year. I am putting a path in this area, but I ran out of pavers and have to wait until next year to finish. I hope I can find the same ones next year.
This is in the rock wall garden. I just moved most of these here about three weeks ago so I would have a large cluster of the AJ.
This is out near the road. The Sedumn is much smaller here than it usually is.
Look at this bee. What are those orange sacks on its legs? I meant to google it, but haven't had the time yet.
Here is the same garden as picture number 1, but looking from the opposite direction where you see mostly BE Susans.

The only thing I still have left to bloom are the autumn asters. I removed most of them, but did leave a patch or two because as raggedy as they are, I would miss them if I didn't have any.

  2. Wow, your sedum and BE Susan look pretty! I swear I think of you everytime I look at the few plants I have.
I think the bee has pollen collected on his legs. I'm reading 'The Secret Lives of Bee'. The bees who collect the pollen are the field bees.

  4. My Sedum Joy is bigger than I've ever had it so must be a good year for them as yours are doing so well too:-) I had transplanted two of them in the flowerbed at the back of the house and two at the front and they're all in bloom. I love all of your Black Eyed Susans, as I've mentioned in my blog, they've always been one of my favourite flowers:-) xoxo

  9. Hi Laurie, Thank you for the nice comment.

Dianne, thanks for letting us know what the orange sacks are. That guy must be quite the worker as he appears to be carrying a heavy load!

LOL, Betty. I don't think I have one plant of anything anymore.

Pea, most of mine are not all that big this year. Some years they are huge, others not. I have no idea why.

Hi Jean, thanks. I have been meaning to tell you how much I enjoy that scented bag you sent me. Every now and then when I walk in the door from work, I get a whiff of it and I always think of you!

Linda, How have you been? Have fun in Wisconsin. Fall is the perfect time to travel!

    Sallyc, Thank you so much!

Hi Susie, We are lucky to have Dianne as a regular reader. She always knows the answer to any question I post. Thanks again, Dianne!

  10. That is an awesome close-up picture that you got of the bee. From what I gather from watching the Bee Movie is that it is pollen or nectar in the sacks. I can't recollect which one. Thanks for sharing I have never seen that before.

  11. Hi Hadias, I don't remember seeing that before either. This year I have a lot of bees around the deck and I have been seeing it all the time.

  12. That bee is packing lots of pollen for the hive, which, after bee processing, will become honey for the hive to winter over on, and feed the little bees. Lucky bees will make enough honey to share with a beekeeper.

Different plants have different colors of pollen, which is why different types of honey are lighter or darker in color... yellow pollen, whitish pollen, orange pollen...

  13. Jenn,
Thank you for the extra info. It's amazing.

So you are basically saying that at some point we may be spreading that orange stuff on our toast?
