Interesting, Fun, or Just Plain Weird Facts about Me

Cindy at Rosehaven cottage tagged me to list some interesting, fun, or weird facts about myself. I've been trying to do this post for over a week. It's not as easy as you might think!
I am really just not good at these things, so don't set your expectations too high. Here goes:

1. I once rode the "shoe" at the county fair 35 times in five days. I used to LOVE going to the fair and riding all the things that turned me upside down.
The "Shoe" looked a lot like this Both "shoes" went around in opposite directions.

2. Twice I have landed in the water in an airplane. No, I didn't crash--it was an amphibian airplaine--one that can land on water or land. Once I landed in some remote Canadian waters and went to a fishing village like this one.

The other time I landed on frozen Lake Huron just to visit the pilot's father (the pilot was a friend of DH#1)

3. When I was about 12, I ran away and hid out in a culvert under a railroad track (very similar to this one). My mom worked and I thought I was old enough to stay home alone rather than go to a babysitter. So when she dropped us off at the sitters, I decided to run away. I made my way through the woods back to my house (1.5 miles), crawled through a bathroom window and packed a few essentials for my escape--a pillow, a tupperware container full of jello, toothbrush, hairbrush, and a change of clothes.

I took off down the railroad tracks and when I came to the culvert I decided to stop right there. The culvert was so close to my home that I could stick my head out and see everyone as they were called home from work to come looking for me.

After seeing all the commotion I had caused, I was afraid to come out and go back home. I sat in that culvert all day long. The thought of having to stay in the culvert in the dark of night finally gave me the courage to go back. You can imagine that they were not too happy with me and my little stunt. The next day I had to go right back to the sitter's house.

That was a rotten thing to do! Sorry, Mom!

#4. I went up in a hot air balloon over Las Vegas. It was great fun and I would love to do it again! I still have my souvenir T-shirt.

#5 I once wore red glasses. BIG red glasses. And I LOVED them! LOL
This picture was taken on a trip to Las Vegas in 1990. I had to take a pic of my scrapbook, hence the blurry pic.

I am not going to tag anyone, but if you want to do it, please do! It's a fun way to get to know each other.

  1. You are a real daredevil, Zoey! The plane rides I could do, but not the "shoe".

How long did you wait to eat the jello? My grandsons are starting to fuss now about the sitters in the summer. Thank God for the after school programs that are available now.

  2. LOL, Sandy. I ate it within the first hour. If your grandsons disappear from the sitters, look in the culverts first!

  3. I use to love going on all the carnival rides over and over again...nowadays just watching them makes me dizzy! lol I'm terrified of heights so don't think you'll catch me on those little bitty planes and hot air balloons!! As for running away, why is it we always think of bringing our toothbrush??? lol xox

  4. Wow - you're really adventuresome - I'm impressed! I've never been in a hot air balloon or small water plane - but that would be fun. The wildest ride I ever did was the Tilt-a-Whirl - I never liked going high or upside down. My glasses were green and purple! Not as wild as it sounds, but a lot of color going on. You must have scared your parents to death - but it is too funny that you took jello! I'm more a chocolate kind of gal!!

This was a fun read - you're right, it is very nice to learn more about our friends in Blogville.

  5. I'm so glad you decided to respond to the tagging, Zoey. I apologize if it cause great distress :) (I don't like being tagged either). I love the fun facts you shared about yourself. Especially the how you packed jell-o when you ran away. I did a similar thing as a kid except my food of choice were big marshmallows in a hankerchief tied around a stick (had to look the part of a runaway, right?). Cindy at Rosehaven Cottage

  6. Hi Zoey,
How fun for you to do a meme! I enjoyed reading all these interesting and fun things about you. I've been up in a hot air balloon once, but have no desire to do it again. Love the red glasses! Very you!!

  7. I remember that day very well Zoey.If my memory serves me right, it was in 1969. Glad I got you kids all grown up without too much trouble. As for the baloon ride I was with you. It was fun. I would like to do that again too.

  8. Interesting answers!
I just found my old early '90s' glasses and I always get a good laugh when I try them on. I like your 'Sally' ones. : )
I think it's neat that you were in a hot air balloon ride with your mom.
As for running away, I think we just went to the neighbors for a little bit, but mom never had to worry about that.
Most carnival rides make me nauseous, but I have been known to ride a few rollers coasters in my time! It's the rides that spin around that aren't user friendly with me!
    I don't like little planes.

  9. I got motion sick just waving to my kids as they passed by on the merry-go-round, so your interesting facts impress the heck out of me, Zoey. But Jello as survival food is simply hysterical.

Since you look adorable in the red spectacles, don't worry... one of these days they'll be back in fashion and you can wear them again;-]

  12. Hi everyone,
Thanks for all the nice comments about my wild youth. :)

Some of you mentioned rides that go around, so I had to share this:

When I first met my darling husband, he took me and my son to a festival where they had rides. My son and I wanted to ride the tilt-a-whirl, but DH said he didn’t like rides.

Being the carnival daredevil I was, I couldn’t believe that anything as mild as the tilt-a-whirl would be too much for him. After much harassing, he agreed to ride with us.

Oh, boy, that was a mistake! The poor guy hurled his cotton candy on about the 4th twirl—--yup, right there on the ride he barfed all over the place. My 7-year old son was mortified. My son is now 30 yrs. old and he still brings it up everytime we mention carnival rides.

Sandi, I think that will be a great way to bring in the big 50!

  14. Years ago I took my youngest and her little girlfriend on a "ship" ride that went up, down and I don't know what else. It was HORRIBLE!! The little friend cried all the way through it :)I haven't been on anything more than the very mild kiddy rides ever since.
It was fun reading this meme Zoey. I know what you mean..they're hard work..but you did well :) I don't like to do them either.
The red glasses are so you!

  15. I forgot to say I laughed out loud at you taking your toothbrush...
Your poor mom. Sounds like she is very forgiving :)
