I May Have Made the Wrong Decision

Remember this spring when I spent days removing all of the fall asters from the deck side garden. When I had them all removed, I planted 6 packages of sunflower seeds. I imagined 6 varieties of beautiful sunflowers--different sizes, colors, and heights. Oh, it would be spectacular!

Well, they are finally blooming and here's what I got:
The few scrawy blooms are way down at the end. It was a bad gardening year--no rain--everything died out early. But geez, I never imagined it would look this bad.
This is what it used to look like with the asters. I thought they looked scruffy.

What was I thinking???

  1. Who knew it would be so dry and hot? Don't be too hard on yourself, we've all got some places like that in our gardens right now.

(But yes, the asters did look better even though they do tend to be kind of scruffy.)

I agree with Carol, I think the asters looked good, but you will find a way to make it work!

  3. Zoey! What were you thinking??? lol Actually, the sunflowers were a great idea but you had no way of knowing it would be a poor season for them...watch them all come up next year! Actually, I think all your sunflowers made their way in my veggie garden, we have tons of them! lol

  4. You just wanted to try something new. I'm sorry the summer was so dry. Now we are getting it here and I see everything getting very sad and droopy. Maybe next year? Also, I had a friend that started her sunflowers in Dixie cups on the windowsills in her house and they got huge!

  5. We had loads of sunflowers. Key word? Had! The squirrels got them all. Yep! Ate the heads off every single one. Ours bloomed again and they ate those too!

  6. I love sunflowers and yet I've never had any success with them.

The asters looked beautiful against the white of the deck. But hey, we all have to experiment with our gardens here and there. It's a learning experience no matter how experienced we may be.

  7. Chin up! Your seeds may come up next year if the birds and squirrels don't find them.

  8. Only one of my asters made it through this summer, so... the weather was pretty hard on everything. Have to admit, the aster photo does look a tad prettier - ;) (at least all of your containers look spectacular!!)

  9. What a shame those sunflowers didn`t come up Zoey. I remember when you posted the packets and thinking how neat they were going to look too. Never realized there were so many different kinds. I`ve personally never had any luck with flower seeds.
But there`s next year now to plan for :)

  10. I think I like the asters better. They look stunning against the rails. Next year, I am going to put lots of them in the back of my garden, and just hope I get to see them a while before frost hits.
