Dahlias & Pears Centerpiece for a Spur-of-the-Moment Dinner

About 1:00 p.m. I took a short walk through the empty lot near me. I came upon an old neglected pear & apple tree. The fruit wasn't edible, but I decided to pick a few branches to bring home anyway. They were the perfect size to put in a new centerpiece.

I am sure getting a lot of use from this vase I bought last week!

Shortly after 1:00 p.m., I called my Mom and invited her and Dad over for dinner tonight. I was already planning to cook a pot roast, fresh-from-the-farmer's-market red potatoes and carrots. There was plenty for four people. I also made a spinach salad with watermelon, grapes, red onion and sugared walnuts. I made my favorite vinegar, oil & soy sauce dressing. I thought it was delicious and plan to make it again tomorrow.
Mom had made one of the family favorite pies -- lemon meringue--earlier this morning and she brought it for dessert. Doesn't it look good?
It's been a while since I had my Mom's lemon pie. It was delicious!

All in all it's been a good day. I hope you are all having a great weekend, too.

Oh, the pupae are still pupating. It's Day 15.

I stuck them outside in a plant where they make a nice focal point to the container.

  3. I love the centerpiece - adding the pear branches was inspired! That dinner looks so good - my mom makes wonderful lemon meringue pie too - yummmmm. I hope we get to see your butterflies emerge - I keep scanning the gardens hoping to see some of mine - so far, nothing.

  4. MMmmm...lemon meringue pie, oh oh I think I'm drooling!!
Love the pears put together with the flowers. We have a young pear tree on our yard and it produced 4 pears for the first time this year...they are very tasty. This is quite a feat for the zone we live in. Here's hoping that next year will produce even more!!

  5. Hi Di, I have to admit that I am so very happy with those dahlias this year. Both the color and the number of flowers they are producing!

lostroses, I suspect you are not giving yourself enough credit. I have seen that you are pretty creative yourself!

Kris, I am beginning to think they are not going to come out this year! I just went out and checked and nothing has happened. I keep checking around my deck, too, for the other three. I haven't seen anything that looks like a new Swallowtail.

Betty, How exciting to get some pears! I bet next year will be even better.
