'Picasso' Canna

This short canna is pure fun with it's brightly-speckled yellow flowers. I run out each morning to see how it changes as it opens.

August 3, 2007 - it's just beginning to open.

August 4, 2007 - Whoa! Big bunch of orange today!

This is the second year for this canna. Both years it has produced some yellow and some orange petals, which is not what I expected. The only pics I have seen of this one feature all yellow flowers with reddish/orange spots.

I think the two-colors on the same plant are wildly interesting. It reminds me of a circus clown, it's so outrageous.

August 5, 2007 -Look at today's petals--1/2 solid orange and 1/2 speckled yellow...split right down the middle.

Here it is with yellow callas--a wonderful combination.
All cannas are not meant to play a starring role. Look at this red one. It's a "yawn" if ever I've seen one. You wouldn't glance twice at it. The leaves are dull, the flower's dull...it'll put you right to sleep if you stare too long.
So I moved the whole container.
Even co-stars win academy awards!

Not to be upstaged by Picasso, Tropicanna burst forth today in all his orange glory.

We still have not had a drop of rain. Thank goodness I still have my deck containers to enjoy!

  1. Zoey,
Your containers look beautiful. I'ts finally raining here in Pittsburgh...a nice, gentle, steady rain. Maybe it will come your way.
PS. I'm seeing purple on my butterfly bush!!

  4. I'm new to your blog......Hello. You have such beautiful flower pots. I love planting different combinations in pots, but have never tried cannas.

I saw the zucchini recipe & think I'll have to try it. We are overrun by zucchini at the moment.

  5. Suzy, PLEASE send the rain my way! I am still a ways off for the butterfly bush blooms. My butterfly bush is really short, too.

lostroses, you are so kind. Just imagine if I had one of those light up pink flamingoes like you do!

Susie, thanks for the sympathy. I bet when it starts it won't stop until October.

debrak, Welcome! I will come over to visit your blog later tonight. I think you will enjoy the recipe.

  8. The pictures here show "Cleopatra" canna, sorry that is not "Picasso". Cleopatra also has the red, random variegation that I see in the pics.
It is still a very strikingly beautiful canna!

  9. HI Anonymous,
I have wondered about this one for quite some time. The label does say "Picasso", but I know they are often inaccurate.
    Thank you for your comment.
