Please, Please Don't Let Me Get Butterfly Wings

They aren't pretty

And I don't want them!
This is me before leaving for work each morning. I grab these 5 lb weights and do a few arm exercises in my attempt to stall the underarm flabbies.

It takes less than 5 minutes. I do enough to feel the burn (in photo 3, I am feelin' the burn!) and then about 20 beyond that point. At first I felt the burn after about 20. I've been doing them for a week now and today I didn't feel it until 60. I did 20 more and my arms felt like lead when I finished. It's not even enough to work up a sweat (hence, I can do them all dressed for work). It's just enough to keep the muscles in use and hopefully, not get those big hanging butterfly wings!!!!

  1. Hi Zoey:
I read your blog every day and enjoy it very much - I especially love the stuff about gardening. I go to the gym about 5 times a week (less in the summer because of gardening) and take some specialty classes while I'm there. The best exercises for "wings" is to hold weights with arms straight above your head and then bending arms back behind your head as far as is comfortable while keeping elbows pointing straight ahead.

  2. These photos look like a page from an exercise book! And they are good for 'the girls' too (even though you don't look like you have the same problem I have).
I have done what the commentator above suggested-without weights. I have touchy shoulder blades and have injured that area and was in pain for 3 weeks.
I've heard that saggy arms wave back at you-wasn't it a joke or something in 'When Harry Met Sally'? : )
With all you gardening (digging), I don't think you need to worry about that!

  3. If it wasn't 'When Harry Met Sally', it was that other Billy Crystal movie...about the comic.

  4. Mom, you should do a few exercises. You need to keep your gavel arm in shape!

Welcome, Anonymous. I am glad you enjoy reading my blog. I know the exercise you are talking about. Until 2 years ago I went to the gym everyday but Sunday (it was closed). I was hooked on the weight machines and had some pretty muscular arms. But I got out of the habit and now have no desire to work out so hard (1 hr/day on weight machines and 1 hour on aerobic).

Dianne, in the summer I don't really worry about it because I do believe the gardening is enough to keep me limber.

  5. Zoey,
I am glad that I am not the only one thinking about this! I also use 5 lb weights, and sometimes use them while I am walking.
We haven't even had a snow yet, and I am missing the exercise I get out in the garden.

  8. Horror of all horrors, this is my big fear....bat wings. I'm trying to tone mine up in time for my sister's wedding. And of course she has chosen a strapless dress for me. Sigh... 8 months to go and counting. I'll think of you Zoey as I'm doing mine, lol. TWT
