I Spotted a Diner sign

"Oh, look, a new diner", I said.
"I've never seen that before," was DH's reply.
"Want to stop?"
"Sure," I say. "Maybe they have malts." (anyone remember malts? I have not had one of those in many years)

The place is empty.
I wonder if that is a bad sign.
I decide it's only empty because it's 2:45 p.m. - a bit late for lunch.
Look at all the old records on the wall.
It appears that people have donated them as each is signed and dated.

I decide the metal stools are so nostalgic and opt to sit at the counter.

We place our order and chat with the owner as he throws DH's burger on the grill.
The burger is barely ready to be flipped before I decide that while the stools may be nostalgic, they are not comfortable.

We move to a table with chairs that provide a bit of cushion.

The cook/owner says, "I knew you wouldn't last long."

The soda is served in a mason jar.
All of the sandwiches are named after 1950's entertainers.
I had the Betty Boop BLT.

We enjoyed the whole diner experience (even though they did not serve malts). Our sandwiches were good and the owner was very friendly. He asked if we were going to be in town at 6:00 p.m. because there was going to be an old car show in front of the diner.

I bet the place is hopping tonight!

  1. There is a soda shop in... er... Grayling? ...that's been around forEVER. I'm guessing they might have malts. Wonder if they have a webpage?

Huh. Nope. Might be Goodales, mentioned here

  2. I love these old fashioned diners with the 50's look!! When I went to Philly one year we went to this one place, can't remember the name of it, but they served the milk shakes in the old fashioned silver containers which you then poured into the old fashioned malt glasses. Elvis was playing on the jukebox...perfect:-)

  3. Jenn,
Thank you for that site. I just went and copied the info. The diner is called Stevens Classic Diner and the bakery is Goodale's. Grayling is only about 1.5 hours away.

Pea, that sounds like it was a neat place. I remember the silver containers. I sure would like to have one of those --I won't be able to rest now until I find a malt!

  5. One of my fondest childhood memories was getting five dollars and going to our local diner with my best friend. We always got the same thing - onion rings, fried cheese curds, and a chocolate malt.
Right now where I live we have a great diner that serves old fashioned malts and they are delicious!

  6. Tammy,
Glad you enjoyed the trip with me.

    Sylvana,
I've never had fried cheese curds. I have had plain cheese curds. Quite a few years ago we stopped in some tiny town in the upper peninsula at a cheese shop and I had curds for the first time. They were very good. We looked for that place last year, but it has closed. You are so lucky to have a great diner near you!
