These are callas, cannas, and dahlias that I over winter in their pots and soil
I am sure this is NOT the expert's way of saving these bulbs/tubers, but I know of no easier method.
Jut remove the foliage and stick the whole container in a cold, but not freezing place and leave it until spring.
I put these in hibernation last October...they have been 7 months in the dark without one drop of water.
See how dry the soil is?
Yet they are already coming up.
I will start watering and fertilizing them and I expect all to make a healthy return.
Confucis say, "Much work ahead to make this big empty deck look inviting. Only crazy lady attempt such task"
Well I have total faith in you! You will restore it to garden magazine quality in no time!
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to watch your deck explode with color!
ReplyDeleteDahlias!
ReplyDeleteThey like to be between 40 and 50 degrees, so that rootcellar-like space in the crawl is perfect!
I think I started mine too early - they are already budded! This is only my second year, so I don't know if they will go all summer, but just having them is great.
Wow, Jenn, already budded? I won't get buds until late July.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the confidence Dianne and Joy. Right now it looks like a huge mess!
You look so young Zoey, and yet Confucius is familiar with your deck. Well done. Perhaps he would help you with the potting.
ReplyDeleteWhat is a crawl space?
And that lush green, green grass. Are you sure your DH didn't just paint it on? I'm sure I can see wide brush strokes....lol
Hi Alice,
ReplyDeletecrawl space is big area under the house where there is no basement - just a 3.5 ft. space- you can't stand up in it, you have to crawl...hence, the name. I use it to store all my pots, etc.
We do love the green grass. It won't last long because we don't water it.
