Black and Blue Salvia Guaranitica

Sandy (My garden) said she had just purchased salvia black and blue and was asking if anyone else had it. Well, I do and here it is. It is growing in a whiskey barrel and is about 2 feet tall. The blue & black colors are outstanding and the humming birds just love to sip daily from the long spikey flowers. I haven't yet really fallen for this one, though, it would be a nice background for something yellow. I have red geraniums in front of it, which is also nice. This is the first year I have grown it. It is perennial in zone 7 and above. Has anyone over wintered this one? If so, how?

  1. This looks very similiar to one I have growing in my garden, except mine reaches at least five foot tall. The most stunning blue flowers (haven't noticed the black)and the green foliage is to die for. It came from my friend E. who has a huge clump of them, they are growing under trees in her garden and thriving so they must be very hardy.
Keep up the good work on your blog. I am very envious of your lovely garden.

  2. Thanks, Calidore. The plant tag does say that it will reach 4 feet.
