Frugal Gardener

I just recently discovered that sometimes it is more frugal to purchase baskets of plants already potted up than to do your own. Maybe all of you already know this, but I have always considered it much more expensive to buy the potted plants. Today I bought two of these ipomea (sweet potato vine) hanging baskets at Home Depot. They were $5.97 each. There are 3 nice sized plants in each basket.

    I buy hanging baskets if they are cheap enough or I really like the flowers. I also like to use the hanging baskets that I have left over and plant unusual things in them. I figure the pots cost nothing, the plants may cost between $3-$5 each (mostly $3) and I found myself some cheaper soil at Big Lots or Walmart.

    If I waited long enough for the middle of summer sales, maybe yes. I'm sorry, I meant that I save the hanging baskets from previous years thus saving me money. And then I get the plants for about $3 or so.

    That's a really nice combination. I especially like how the yellow/green ipomea combines with the black one.
